Approach

From everyday routines to a clear brief.

A useful brief describes how you want to live before it describes how a room should look. Follow the four steps, then try a short sample brief of your own.

How a brief develops

Four steps, one conversation.

  1. Step 1 of 4· Now viewing

    Start with routines

Who is home in the morning, who works from the dining table, where bags and shoes land, when the kitchen gets busy. The brief begins with daily life rather than a mood board.

  2. Step 2 of 4· Now viewing

    Map the space

Trace the routes people take through the home and note where things need to be stored along them. Priorities become places: a bench by the door, a desk that closes away, a clear path to the window.

  3. Step 3 of 4· Now viewing

    Choose materials and light

Choose an atmosphere, then test it against use: surfaces that cope with cooking, textiles that stay comfortable, and light for evenings as well as daytime.

Material samples: dark and natural oak, textured ivory tile, pale stone, charcoal linen, a deep red weave and brushed bronze.

  4. Step 4 of 4· Now viewing

    Shape the brief

Put it all into clear words that can guide every later decision: which rooms, what matters most, and the feeling you want to come home to.
